The Sun in Pisces

The final sign of the zodiac is sometimes said to be a combination of all that has gone before which makes sense for a sign known for dissolving the separateness. Pisces folk can be a very sensitive and intuitive sign, valuing attributes such as compassion and the art of giving as primary in their development of self-esteem. Their hearts easily crack open when they come across pain, suffering, and the hardship experienced by so many creatures, humyn, plant, and animal alike, reflecting their inherent empathy. The fish can appear as dreamy and perhaps somewhere between the worlds - which they probably are - but that shouldn’t be mistaken for weakness or lack of understanding of our consensus reality. They’re tuned into the undercurrents of any given situation making them especially valuable in getting to the secret heart of the matter - if they are able to translate their findings into a language we can all understand.

Now, the great gift of Pisces folks - their ability to dissolve separateness - is also the source of their downfall. Setting up boundaries for their own wellbeing, whether good relationship boundaries or psychic boundaries so that they aren’t continuously overwhelmed by intuitive input, is essential but can be very difficult for the fish. They need to learn that setting up healthy boundaries does not make them less compassionate or able to connect but quite the opposite. With clearly defined boundaries that protects their wellbeing and cultivates healthy relationships they will have greater space to stretch their compassion muscle, develop their psychic senses without leading to overwhelm, and experience healing vulnerability without be treated like a doormat.

Within a medical astrology context, Pisces folks need to guard their vitality carefully as they’re not always engaged with their physical form as much as their soul’s journeying. Pisces guards the fluids of the body including the blood and mucus and when imbalanced they can find themselves experiencing poor circulation and lowered immunity, as well as wet, damp illnesses such as phlegm-y chest colds and tuberculosis. Similar to the sign which precedes them, Aquarius, Pisces folks need to be conscious of the environmental, chemical, and psychic pollutants in their environment. I’ve seen more than one fish folk flinch when they’ve walked into a room where there has been a fierce argument or fight whether it happened 5 minutes ago or 50 years ago - Pisces folk are often tuned into such subtleties of the environment which can be great for picking up psychic information but completely overwhelming if they don’t know what’s going on or how to shield themselves properly. A nutritive diet full of grounding foods can be very helpful as well as regular time spent working with gentle healing modalities such as reflexology (Pisces guards the feet), energy healing, and flower and gem essence therapy. With careful attention to their boundaries, Pisces folks become even more adept as dissolving that which divides us providing space for folks to find one another in love and compassion amidst the turmoil of our modern world that seeks to continuously convince us that we should remain divided.

Pisces Guardian Herbs

Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) via wikipedia

Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus)

A creature of the sea and watery places, Pisces Guardian herbs include the domain of sea plants such as seaweed. Bladderwrack is a common form of kelp that has been used medicinally for hundreds of years. The plant is both a Remedy and Guardian herb of Pisces, helping the body absorb nutrients and expel toxins which is key to Piscean health. As a metabolic tonic, Bladderwrack improves the rate of the metabolism and has been used to support a healthy body weight. As a cleansing plant, Bladderwrack pulls toxins from the body including radiation and other environmental toxins, aiding our more sensitive Pisces folk. The herb is useful in treating hypothyroid and hyperthyroid conditions as it supports healthy thyroid hormonal production. Regular consumption of Bladderwrack improves the body’s overall ability to heal, promotes quality sleep, lowers chronic high blood pressure, and improves the condition of the hair and skin. The herb cleanses thekidneys, clears lymph congestion, addresses bacterial and fungal infection, detoxifies body tissue, stimulates the adrenal glands, and assists in the recovery from long-term illness. The herb is also useful in reducing enlarged prostates. Historically, Bladderwrack has been used in the treatment of tuberculosis, another common Pisces complaint.

Topically, Bladderwrack can be used as a skin tonic, improving the skin’s complexion and suppleness. Use the herb in a bath to assist in breaking down cellulite. In general, Bladderwrack can be used as a compress for arthritis, bruises, sprains, hardened glands, and inflammation.

Pine (Pinus spp.)

The mighty Pine stands as a sturdy ally for our Pisces friends. The leaves of the tree are an excellent (and tasty!) source of vitamin C, helping Pisces folks to keep their immune system happy and healthy. Pine has such a strength of vitality - have you ever stood tall in a forest of Pine gazing up at their amazing heights? You should - you’ll learn about our tree friend through such an experience. The resin of Pine can be used in tincture form as an excellent expectorant helping to clear excess mucus from the lungs, a common Piscean complaint. You can also create a salve with the resin which can be applied topically to the body to improve circulation and warm tired and sore muscles.

I am a particular fan of Pine pollen which can be enjoyed in powder form and easily added to smoothies and drinks. Pine pollen is a golden sunbeam of nutrition! Full of vitamins and minerals, Pine Pollen contains 20 amino acids, including the 8 essential amino acids and minerals such as Calcium, Iron and Zinc. A friend to the prostate, Pine Pollen is a wonderful preventative ally of prostate disease. Pine Pollen also helps to regulate metabolism, increase energy, and dispel brain fog (you see how it can be a great friend of our fish folk).

Amethyst by Alexis J. Cunningfolk

Amethyst by Alexis J. Cunningfolk

The key phrase of Amethyst Gem Essence is “I go with the flow.” The cleverness of the purple stone is that it teaches us to go with the flow but not get overtaken or overwhelmed by the current. The stone is centering and grounding without blocking necessary psychic permeability which is a powerful tool for Pisces folk. Along with its  centering properties, Amethyst is also helps address those anxious thoughts that wake us up in the middle of the night and spur on arguments between loved ones. Amethyst helps us to float gently when the waters feel tumultuous, eventually leading to a current that guides us gently back to shore.

The Sun in Aquarius

The infamous nonconformists of the zodiac, Aquarians take great pride in their personal freedom and eccentricity. They have abundant levels of creative and visionary energy which they often direct towards bettering society. The Water-bearers love innovation, experimentation, and practices that shake up the dominant paradigm. Aquarius folk can be driven by a persistent need to make the world “right” and seek out justice wherever it might be - they are definitely oriented towards the position of leader (even within collective and consensus-based communities) and want to be in charge of making change happen. Get weird, get going, and get it done!, our Aquarius folk chant in the street.

Aquarius folk can get into conflict fairly easily if they don’t ease up on their need to be in charge and their ability to make others feel small around them. It is important for them to learn how to value the insights and opinions of others even if it doesn’t always align with their own. The sign can be very dogmatic and have an inner desire for structure and convention that their outward expressions of eccentricity often masks. Remember, their traditional Guardian Planet is Saturn the rule-maker and tradition-keeper. Learning to be at peace with their need for structure and eccentricity is important. Sometimes Aquarius folks can be rebels without a cause or so invested in their unique individuality that they lose their ability to deeply love and connect with others. Accountability is a key concept for Aquarius folks to learn as well as cooperation so that they can be a leading part in the revolution they dream of.

Within a medical astrology, Aquarius folks can have intermittent levels of vitality with their energy turning on or off in a flash. The sign guards the electrical energy of the body and can be extra sensitive to electromagnetic fields and outside sources of stimulation in general - so be mindful of exposure levels whether from power lines, computers, phones, other devices outputting EMF, and sensory overloading environments. They have to be particularly mindful of nourishing their nervous system on a daily basis in combination with heart healthy tonics as their electrical fluctuations can detrimentally affect both. Aquarius folks can become accident prone when they are not paying attention to the needs of their nervous system. Again, learning to focus on cooperation (both in relationships and in the internal processing of their body) can lead to sustainable patterns of coordination. Aquarius is also a fixed air sign which means that they can suffer from the complaints of trapped wind or gas in the digestive tract as well as blowing smoke in order to impress others. When Aquarius folks nurture their inner world instead of always focusing on the outer impact of their goal to change the world, they are able to grow their gifts of visionary insight, creating a truly inclusive movement that revolutionizes the way that we connect as humyns.

Aquarius Guardian Herbs

Lavender flowers by Alexis J. Cunningfolk

Lavender flowers by Alexis J. Cunningfolk

Lavender (Lavandula officinalis)

Lavender brings peace and compassion, which is what many Aquarius folks are striving for in their vision for bettering the world.  There herb helps to calm without creating drowsiness but instead cultivating focus helping Aquarius folks to refine their plans. The herb relieves tension including the headaches and indigestion that can arise from such a state. Lavender is my foundational herb for my emotional bitters blend as it helps us to digest all of our emotions, but especially difficult ones that have a tendency to get trapped in the body. Lavender can help to soften the jolts of energy that run through Aquarius folks while enhancing their energetic output, clearing out lethargy and laziness. The color of the herbs, a beautiful purple, implies through the doctrine of signatures, its connection to vision of a psychic variety and as an herb thats scent carries readily on the wind, it supports the air-driven energies of Aquarius folk who are trying to share their vision with the world. The herb is a great ally for asthma attacks brought about by tension. Use also for coughs and colds that are aggravated by excess stagnation in the chest, as Lavender helps to clear out congestion.

Topically, Lavender has many uses for alleviating the pain of sore muscles, arthritic pain, and bruises to reducing varicose veins, eczema, and acne. It is one of my favorite herbs to add to baths creating a tension-relieving brew that is calming for cranky humyns of all ages. Use in chest rubs for colds and coughs as well as in mouthwash for mouth ulcers and inflamed gums. The essential oil is an excellent ally for relieving the itch of insect bites.

Aquarius Remedy Herbs

Willow Tree in England via wikipedia

Willow Tree in England via wikipedia

Willow (Salix alba)

White Willow is the original aspirin which can be used by Aquarian folks who are prone to accidents. Containing salicin, which relieves fever and inflammation as well as reduce pain, White Willow has many of the benefits of aspirin – and more! – without the side affects that the tiny white pill carries. A cooling herb, White Willow clears heat from the inflammation of rheumatism and rheumatic fever to hot flashes and headaches brought on or irritated by heat. White Willow is an excellent herb for pain reduction and improved mobility, helping in the cases of backache, migraines, and general soreness. Combined with herbs like St. Joan’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) it can be used in cases of nerve pain and damage. White Willow moves infection out of the body, staunches internal bleedings, and can be used for hot flashes, night sweats, and general states of overheating. As an astringent, White Willow is also useful for hemorrhoids and varicosities that can occur when Aquarius folks find themselves in a state of poor circulation and the resulting stagnation lack of flow can bring about.

Topically, White Willow is prized as a pain reliever whether in the form of a poultice, liniment, oil or salve. White Willow is also used for bruises, sprains, warts, skin tags, poison ivy, and burns. The herb can also be used in mouthwashes to relieve gum inflammation and in hair rinses for dandruff. Magickally, White Willow is associated with death and new beginnings which very much aligns with the Aquarian vision of revolutionary evolution through the death of the old and the birth of the new.

Sun in Aquarius Flower Essence

Witch Hazel via wikipedia

Witch Hazel via wikipedia

Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) Flower Essence connects Aquarius folk with their inner landscape, grounding them in reality without smothering their Aquarian visions. The Flower Essence is appropriate for Aquarius folk who have gone too long without really connected to and expressing themselves as the essence helps them to navigate the anxiety and depression that may have emerged as consequence. If they have gotten caught up in the cycle of not feeling like they have “achieved” enough, especially when in comparison with others, Witch Hazel helps them to evaluate their lives from a place of self-confident centeredness, rather than the vicious cycle of constantly comparing ourselves to others. Witch Hazel brings Aquarius folk back into the balance of relationships that reflect, not judge, and teaches them the power of their oddness and the beauty of how they dream of light in the dark of winter.

The Sun in Capricorn

The mighty goatfish is one of the hardest working signs of the zodiac. They are known for their self-determination, authoritative expression, and self-control. A core value of many Capricorn folk is responsibility - their sense of self is often shaped by what they perceive their responsibilities (especially to others) to be. They appreciate the usefulness of tradition and then sometimes get lost in preserving tradition for tradition’s sake instead of evolving customs to meet changing needs. Sometimes their sense of responsibility and frustration that the world is not ordered in the “right” way can lead to a deep sense of pessimism and depression. They can easily become stagnant and unmoving in their cynicism. Capricorns can get so caught up in what is “acceptable” that they forget their own needs and desires. Yet, while Capricorn is so often described as a very serious sign they have a surprising trickster element becoming the old wise one with the strange and illuminating jokes once they learn to ease up on their self-imposed constraints.

Within astroherbology, Capricorn is the sign of regulation, reflecting the power of their Guardian Planet, Saturn. The sign guards the pituitary gland which secretes important regulatory hormones throughout the body. When Capricorn gets into trouble is when they attempt to live an over-regulated life, seeking to exert control over every aspect of living, often leading to restriction of movement and stagnation. A common trait I see with a lot of Capricorn folk that leads to a number of health imbalances is unexpressed anger which then builds up in the liver and gall bladder. Problems with the liver leads to problems with the digestion and Capricorn folk, who tend to run cold and dry, can often have a weakened digestive system to begin with. Painful gall stones, too, can build up. They are a sign known for a build-up of tension, so learning a variety of self-relaxation techniques is key to longevity. It is also very important for Capricorn folk to pay attention to the foods they eat, discovering and addressing any food allergies they may have, and being mindful of restricting calories unnecessarily (which can start as an attempt to alleviate an underperforming digestive system that feels unable to digest food properly). Food allergies and other imbalances often make themselves known through skin irritations such as eczema and other rashes. Another aspect of Capricorns is that they are often more sick earlier in life and grow in strength as they age (remember the old wise one with the illuminating jokes I mentioned?).

Capricorn folk need their space to make plans, find inspiration, and cultivate peace in quiet. They are not the most collaborative of signs, preferring more hierarchical structures to collectives, but having clear definitions of roles in any of their relationships helps them to lighten up and work better in groups. Remember, even if Capricorn folks may sometimes come off as strict and judgmental, they are often far more restricting and judging of themselves on a level that most of us will never (thankfully) attain. Be kind to your grumpy neighborhood goatfish because their magick is so very worth it. When they are dwelling confidently in their wisdom, Capricorn folks bring the gift of unexpected homecomings. They can open up ways of feeling at home that lost souls never thought possible again. Capricorn folks can be sturdy powerhouses of social change once they learn that taking care of and cultivating self-worth within themselves first will allow them to better help others to do the same.

Capricorn Guardian Herbs

Mullein via wikipedia

Mullein via wikipedia

Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)

Mullein is described by Nicholas Culpeper as being under the guardianship of Saturn, which is in part why the herb is considered a Guardian of Capricorn. The herb is a great ally during the winter months, helping to clear phlegm from the system, reduce inflammation, and protect against infection. It is excellent for clearing out chronic, long-standing coughs, especially dry and spasmodic coughs, and can help with a number of respiratory complaints including bronchitis, asthma, and general lung weakness. Add the herb to your cold and flu blends with Elder (Sambucus nigra) and Peppermint (Mentha piperita) for a lung-opening, immunomodulating blend. Mullein is useful, too, for Capricorn folk who tend towards stagnant cold states which lead to swellings and cysts as the herb helps to dissolve such manifestations of buildup. In her Physica, Hildegard von Bingen recommended Mullein for “one who is hoarse or has a pain in his chest” recommending that they combine the herb with Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) in a medicinal wine.

Topically, the mucilaginous Mullein is excellent for dry skin conditions but also as a healing compress for boils, bruises, inflammation, hemorrhoids, and joint pain. Mullein and garlic ear oil is a trusted remedy for ear infections helping to relieve pain and infection. I always keep a small bottle of Mullein and Garlic oil in my home care kit just for this reason. The long thick stems are sometimes referred to as Hag’s Tapers (the dried stalks dipped in wax will burn as a somewhat messy candle) as they are associated with the magickal workings of Witchfolk. You can also tuck the leaves into your shoe for added comfort and protection on your journeys.

Capricorn Remedy Herbs

Cayenne via wikipedia

Cayenne via wikipedia

Cayenne (Capsicum annuum)

Cayenne is a traditional remedy for states of excess cold and moistness. The hot and drying herb is an excellent remedy for a stomach weakened by cold - a common ailment of out-of-balance Capricorn folk. American herbalist and founder of the Thompsonian system of medicine, Samuel Thompson, used Cayenne as a primary remedy in his practice as it was so effective at clearing out a congested gut and stimulating the digestive fire. Cayenne helps to relieve pain by stimulating the release of endorphins in the brain to whatever area it is applied to. The herb is a great ally in times of colds and ‘flus, clearing congestion, relieving aches and pain, and warming cold body systems. Mix together 1 quart of water with half a lemon, a 1/2 teaspoon of Cayenne powder, some maple syrup to taste, for an effective and hydrating cold remedy brew (I used this on more than one occasion during my college years when ingredients for my remedies consisted of what I could find in the dining hall). The herb stimulates circulation and warms the blood, which can be great during the winter, in helping to recover from a period of illness, dissipating pain caused from the cold and stagnation, as well as stimulate the libido.

Topically, it is used in compresses and oils for arthritis, sprains, strains, bruises, inflammation, and to warm under-stimulated parts of the body. Use in a foot bath for colds and the ‘flu or in a gargle for sore throats. The herb also stops bleeding quickly. A little Cayenne goes a long way internally or externally to be effective - too much can invite an irritating bite.

Sun in Capricorn Flower Essence

Elm (Ulmus procera) Flower Essence is for Capricorn folk who have been going, going, going, and now they can’t go anymore. They have been so focused on getting it done that they have taxed their limits, often ignoring their own basic needs (like eating enough food and getting enough sleep) because of their overwhelming sense of responsibility. Elm helps Capricorn folk to realize that they are responsible to their needs, too, and it is not responsible to work themselves to the point of a nervous and physical breakdown. The essence helps Capricorn folk to slow-down and restore the spirit, learning how shift their sense of self-worth from being based solely on their ability to complete their perceived responsibilities, to understanding that they don’t have to prove themselves worthy - they already are and always will be.

The Sun in Sagittarius

There they go! Sagittarius folks are excellent adventurers chasing the fading light at the far end of the horizon. They are highly individualistic taking pride in their understanding of just how unique they are. Since Sagittarian folks can value liberty and personal freedom above all else if they begin to feel even the slightest bit boxed-in or restricted they can become spooked, angered, or some combination thereof, and run off. They can be some of the most socially-oriented of the signs (competing with Gemini) and have a friendly and inquisitive nature which helps them grow a wide and varied social circle. Their fiery mutability can lead them to being very good at burning up the opposition in any argument or discussion which, combined with their hot-headed pride, can sometimes make them difficult to folks to collaborate with. On the flip-side their big vision helps expand what is possible with any project. Learning tolerance and acceptance for the value of different opinions and different standards of living (especially standards of living that they consider narrow-minded) can go a long way in helping Sagittarius folks to recognize that we’re all unique and that doesn’t make their uniqueness any less special.

In regards to health, Sagittarius folks often experience imbalances arises from excess heat. They are a mutable fire sign so when heat gets trapped in their bodies, whether from injury, over-exertion that leads to weakness, and/or unexpressed emotional turmoil, their systems can become dried out and irritated. Sagittarius is also the sign of accidents, especially athletic ones (and traditional texts mention falls from horses specifically), so taking seriously proper training and recovery practices goes a long way to help protect the mighty Centaur. It is important for Sagittarius folk to seek out regular restorative and centering activities that cool an overstimulating body, mind, and spirit. Hydration is a key to any sign’s health, but fire signs like Sagittarius tend towards being dehydrated more than others. Not only water, but healthy oils and fats will help keep everything running smoothly for our Centaur in addition to mellowing out the sugar imbalances this sweet-tooth inclined sign can often experience. Known for their optimism, a sure sign of a out-of-balance Sagittarius folk is that their optimism has been replaced with a angry chronic pessimism that leaves them closing their eyes to their beloved horizon and raging both internally and externally.

Hanging out with Sagittarius folk can be an adventure in-and-of itself and its well worth the effort! They spark and dance and reach for new ideas and have a whole lot of fun along the way. Details may not be the strong suit of Sagittarius folk, but it is part of the reason they carry the free spirit that they do. Being mindful that others pointing out the importance of the little details can be a very good and helpful thing and is not always a criticism, Sagittarius folk will become even wiser. Their “this is who I am, take it or leave it” attitude can be extraordinarily refreshing. It can also lead to a lot of moments of “foot-in-mouth,” but this can also be tempered with some maturity and self-awareness. Once Sagittarius folks realize that humility goes a long way when it comes to getting folks to listen to what you have to say, they become even more powerful in their ability to inspire creativity and optimism in those around them.

Sagittarius Guardian Herbs

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) by Robert Engelhardt

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) by Robert Engelhardt

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)

Nicholas Culpeper writes in his Herbal that Dandelion “is under the dominion of Jupiter. It is of an opening and cleansing quality, and therefore very effectual for the obstructions of the liver, gall and spleen, and the diseases that arise from them, as the jaundice, and hypochondriac.” The whole plant can be used in healing and its primary skill lies in its ability to help vitality move freely through the body. One of the primary ways that Dandelion accomplishes this is by clearing the blood of toxins and waste material through strengthening the liver. Dandelion has a tonic effect on the blood, lymph system, and liver, helping to detoxify all three and improve the eliminatory qualities of the liver and gallbladder. Part of it’s blood purifying qualities comes from its high nutritive salt contents which cleans the blood and clears excess acid. The herb stimulates the production of bile in the gallbladder (by causing it to contract) triggering the liver to do the same. Dandelion is especially useful for clearing an overburdened liver of excess hormones. Increasing bile and strengthening the digestive tract, Dandelion helps us to absorb nutrients from what we ingest and then move those nutrients throughout our body.

Additionally, Dandelion cools overheated PMS symptoms, menstrual cramping, and painful menopause, especially when water retention, pelvic congestion, and feelings of extreme frustration are present. Really, Dandelion is good for chronic inflammation of all sorts. Another indication that the movement of Dandelion is needed is that being still, lying down, and resting can worsen conditions, but healing touch, such as massage, brings relief. Use the sap topically for warts, calluses, corns, and general rough skin. The leaf and flower can be used as a wash for skin irritation. The infused oil of the flowers can be used for stiff muscles and muscle pain as well as relieve the discomfort of arthritis.

Sagittarius Remedy Herbs

Burdock (Arctium lappa) by Christian Fischer

Burdock (Arctium lappa) by Christian Fischer

Burdock (Arctium lappa)

During the turn of the 19th century, detoxifying Burdock was used a remedy for folks coping with the excess pollution of the Industrial Age. The hard-working herb is well-deserved of its reputation for helping eliminating waste and polluting contents from the body. The plant is wonderfully cooling and moistening which, along with its anti-inflammatory prowess, acts as a wonderful remedy to worn-out and overheated Sagittarian folk. Look for signs of dry and scaly skin, dry-out digestion and stools, and a short temper. Burdock is useful in cooling hot-blooded conditions and helping the body to deliver and use fats and oils wisely. Sagittarian folk have a tendency towards a sweet-tooth (over-stimulating food can be just as much fun as over-stimulating adventure) and Burdock can assist with sugar imbalances and lessening sugar cravings.

Burdock moistens from the inside out, but can also be used topically as a wash or in compresses to reduce swellings, bruises, sprains, and strains. The herb is excellent for restoring the body to a state of balance through its detoxifying and oil-directing qualities that it can be an excellent choice for recovering after a period of over-exertion, illness or injury.

The strong-willed and adaptable Sagittarius folk can be very difficult to deal with once they have made their mind up that they are right. They are incredible committed to their beliefs and strong-willed in their presentation of them. Sagittarius folk can come off as over-bearing and dogmatic, but there is also something quite incredible about Sagittarius folk when they shift just a little. When they are committed, without persuasion to tolerance, compassion, complexity, and non-judgement they are superb souls who model the power of the will. To help Sagittarius folk develop a pattern of non-dogmatic behavior, Vine (Vitis vinifera) Flower Essence offers its services. Vine is a Flower Essence for over-bearing personalities that can have little regard for others and their feelings as long as they feel they are in the right and doing what they want to be doing. Vine helps Sagittarius folk soften up, respect boundaries, and learn to be in power-with others not power-over them. Becoming more flexible and compassionate, Vine assists Sagittarius folk lose the attitude of greatness and instead just be great.

The Sun in Scorpio

Ah, the realm of the Sun in Scorpio is a shadowy place of deep secrets and ancient mysteries - or so that is what many a taloned-tailed Scorpion would have you think. It is quite true that many Scorpio folk are drawn to the mysterious, the arcane, and the ancient. For some it is an aesthetic and for others it is a life calling. They are, in fact, drawn towards greater depths of intimacy than many of us dare tread, not only physical intimacy (though Scorpio is the guardian of reproductive organs, especially their external display and their connection to sexuality), but psychic and emotional intimacy. Scorpio folk seek subtlety and vulnerability, especially in their connection to power and potential. Depending on how they’re relationship skills are and where there level of compassion is, they can cause lots of conflict or incredible moments of ecstatic self-realization.

Health-wise, Scorpio folk have a tendency to accumulate toxins. They are a fixed water sign (as opposed to the cardinal Cancer or the mutable Pisces) and their still waters can easily take on too much toxicity, whether it is physical toxicity from environmental poisoning or emotional toxicity from letting feelings simmer and brew instead of being released. Stagnation and lack of warmth are often found at the foundation of Scorpio health imbalances. Scorpio folk do already have an inherent detoxifying quality that is stronger in them than most other signs - they tend to push the toxins out of their bodies leading to possibilities of chronic acne, poor body odor, excess sweat, diarrhea, and/or irritability. It is, therefore, so important for Scorpio folk to come to the surface with scheduled regularity and gently detoxify so they don’t find themselves at a point when serious detoxification and intervention is needed having overworked their own inherent cleansing systems. While Scorpio folk tend towards chronic imbalances, they are extraordinarily sturdy and feisty fighters when it comes to regaining their health.

Scorpio folks can be tricky companions at times, but their friendship is well worth the effort, especially when clear boundaries of behavior are established. They teach us how to chase after the mysterious with ecstatic focus and to experience the mystical, rather than just reading about it. They can be persnickety and manipulative when out of balance and their ability to successfully but inappropriately control a situation stems from a twisted use of their gift of emotional intelligence (notice I wrote intelligence and not wisdom - that’s a mini Scorpio lesson for you). Yet, when they are in balance and behaving wisely Scorpio folk help to illuminate how our vulnerabilities make us that much more wise and how to use them as a compass for our own magickal adventures.

Scorpio Guardian Herbs

Blessed Thistle (Cnicus benedictus)

Spiky and unexpectedly useful, Blessed Thistle is already distinguished as a Scorpio herb by the doctrine of signatures. Blessed Thistle has recorded use since ancient Greece and is a powerful bitter herb that awakens a damp and weak digestion (listen for sounds of gurgling as well as feelings of distention and flatulence). The herb is used as a treatment for malaria - malaria is caused by a parasite and parasitic diseases are fall under the sign of Scorpio. Blessed Thistle detoxifies drugs and alcohol from the body and has historic use by American Indians, such as the Quinault, as a contraceptive. The herb is an emmenagogue which also helps to bring on delayed menses and clears out excess phlegm and damp from the body, yet, it is not overly drying. In fact, Blessed Thistle, is far more regulating of bodily fluids and is a superb breastfeeding ally for supporting a healthy supply of milk.

The herb is also a nervine and can be used to relieve spastic pain and headaches, especially when brought on by nervous tension. The herb surrounds us in protective energy while helping us to clear out the muck, including brain fog, and reawaken our inner spark. Blessed Thistle can also help with the release of old emotions and it uplifts the spirits when taken over the long term (both useful and needed for Scorpio folk). The essence is particularly helpful in bringing wisdom from the ether into our physical reality. Topically, the herb can be used for boils, shingles, weepy eczema, and bleeding.

Scorpio Remedy Herbs

Wormwood via botanical.com

Wormwood via botanical.com

Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium)

Parasitic diseases are often Scorpio imbalances and Wormwood is a powerful anti-parasitic herbal ally. It is a cleansing herb that should be used with respect and training. The herb is supremely bitter and excellent at expelling worms and parasites from the system. It is also a digestive herb when toxicity has built up in the gut and led to inflammatory diseases of the gut where infection is present. The herb can also be used when lack of appetite has become chronic, digestion is consistently poor, and there are signs of nervous exhaustion (which is why, in part, Wormwood has long been used in cases of anorexia). Wormwood clears persistent fevers, purifies the blood, and can help pull poisons from the body such as lead. The herb can also be used in the treatment of infertility, amenorrhoea, placental retention and after-birth pain. As a Scorpio herb, Wormwood is for when toxicity has built-up over a long period of time and it causing serious complications to a person’s health and wellbeing.

Wormwood also contains thujone which works as a brain stimulant but is also one of the reasons why the herb should be used by a trained herbalist and for a short amount of time in small doses since thujone can be toxic in large amounts. Externally, Wormwood can help treat fleas and lice as well as fungal skin conditions such as athlete’s foot. Use as a compress for bruises and joint pain.

Sun in Scorpio Flower Essence

Holly via wikipedia

Holly via wikipedia

Holly (Ilex aquifolium)

The flower essence of Holly (Ilex aquifolium) is one that I recommend particularly for those born under a Dark Moon in Scorpio which are folks who are typically deeply embedded in the part of Scorpionic nature that loves what is hidden and mysterious. Holly is, however, an equally important remedy for Scorpio Sun folk, helping them connect to others, warm up their sometimes cold and calculating persona, and help them develop a greater sense of compassion. The essence helps to release feelings of anger and envy towards others, especially when Scorpio folk feel they have been personally wronged and do not know how to move on or resolve the situation. Holly turns the heart towards love, especially when there is distrust, and I recommend that Scorpio folks not only use it internally, but as an external body wash and home spray to help soften their tough exterior. Holly softens the outer shell of Scorpio folk and helps to let the love in.
