The Plant Allies of the Lungs
Respiratory tonics, expectorants, nervines, bronchodilators, and antispasmodics
Elecampane (Inula helenium): A traditional Latin prescription for Elecampane reads Enula campana reddit praecordia sana or “Elecampane will sustain the spirit.” Elecampane expels and is a great plant ally for damp coughs with lots of mucus. The herb helps us to find out breath again after a period of shock, stress or trauma.
Mullein (Verbascum thapsus): Mullein moistens and is an excellent plant ally for dry, hacking coughs. A great herb for when nerve and/or joint pain is present. Mullein helps us to move stagnant energy that has built up in our body by activating the deep push and pull power of the lungs to draw breath through to all of our edges.
Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis): A good warming and drying herb for cold and damp conditions of the chest. It's a wonderfully cleansing herb, both medicinally and magickally, and a great ally to turn to if you're feeling like the path of your breath is hindered. Hyssop helps us to release built up emotional catarrh, Hyssop helps to bring a feeling of sacredness to the body and spirit by reminding us that we are whole and holy.
Flower & Gem Essences: All the plants already listed can be used as flower essences. Other essences include Lungwort (Pulmonaria officinalis), Gentian (Gentiana amarella), Gorse (Ulex europaeus) Rock Water, Mustard (Sinapis arvensis), Agate, and Citrine.
Additional lung herbs: Sage (Salvia officinalis), Linden (Tilia x europaea), Peppermint (Mentha piperita), Plantain (Plantago major), Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora), Sacred Basil (Ocimum sanctum, tenuiflorum), Horehound (Marrubium vulgare), Thyme (Thymus vulgaris), Marshmallow (Althea officinalis), and Oregano (Origanum vulgare).
